Recovering Files from an Unresponsive Hard Disk!

My laptop's hard disk became unresponsive after a few power outages. I took it out and connected it to another machine through USB as an external drive. It spins and reads. The 4 partitions seem to appear, alas no info on their sizes or contents or on any other of their properties. In fact, it causes the entire machine to hang too.
I do not believe the disk has endured any physical damage. I have important files in one of the partitions. The first partition is what Windows creates for its boot management and it's about 100 megabytes in size. The second partition is a Windows 7 partition holding those important files. The third partition is also a Windows 7 partition, probably without any important files, though I'm not sure. The fourth partition is unallocated space, and it's never been formatted.
Thank you !!

HP 15-ba053nr laptop

uses the xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu package, not available in debian jessie, but available in stretch. Currently running arch though for best compatibility.
- backlight needs special kernel parameters.
----- " acpi=force acpi_backlight=vendor "
And the usual echo ### > /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_b10/brightness
where ### is 0 - 255 changes the brightness of the LCD, 0 being off
xbacklight doesn't seem to recognize the device, although same issue going from debian jessie to stretch for my hp stream 11.
The /sys/class/... is root:root by default, so change that after boot if you want the user to use it, otherwise only as root does it work.
Thank you !!

Which scanner to buy

I have an old Epson 2450 Perfection scanner that did a decent job of scanning 35mm color slides. On Windows. But I don't have a Windows box anymore and don't want one.
On Linux, with XSane and other such programs that scanner does a good job in flatbed mode but it fails to turn on the backlight when in "transparency" mode. So for transparencies it doesn't work at all.
I bought VueScan and that doesn't work in transparency mode either.
Wine dies trying to startup various twain dot exe drivers from Epson.
I'm ok with that. It's a 15 year old scanner. I'm happy to buy a new one but I want a scanner that will do 35mm slides, from Mint Cinnamon Linux. Actually I don't care about linux distribution.
I just want a scanner that works, and I don't have a Windoze box anymore.
Any suggestions?

AMD Build with Asus and Ryzen but budget conscious

Always overwhelmed with the options and the details.
I have an Asus GTX 970 Ti Strix on an Asus MoBo with an old FX 6300
Skyrim SE with zillion mods is getting a bit choppy and my Dax Studio IRay renders are okay but man, loading scenes takes ages. Like a full minute sometimes. Ugh.
Samsung evo 840 SSD's and a few HDDs for backing up things. All on SATA.
So now I'm just not sure... I have good experience with Asus so I'll probably stick with that but I want to be able to hook up a lot of SATA devices.
I work with compressed files a lot and the FX 6300 is showing its age there. So I figure I upgrade to a Ryzen but which one???
What do I need 8 cores for? Is the little bit of MHZ really going to make a difference everyday?
Apparently I really ought to pay attention to RAM and I just want to know what to buy without breaking the bank. I don't need too of the line. I need sensible budget conscious workhorse equipment that I can live with for 3 years or so.
