Responsibility as the Best Method of Crime Prevention

Perpetrators are always responsible for committing a crime. In other words, there is a direct connection between the actor and the action. For instance, in the novel “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, there are no doubts that the guilt of Santiago Nasar’s death lies on two Vicario brothers, who had avenged him for taking their sister’s virginity. A partial responsibility also lies on the Angela Vicario, who had lied about the sexual relationships with Santiago Nasar. Nevertheless, blaming exclusively Vicario family is a rather limited opinion. Almost all citizens of a town did not make any attempts to prevent the tragedy, although they had been informed about the brothers’ intention to murder the man. Thus, the community should also share some responsibility for the homicide. The crime is not only a matter of criminals but rather that of the whole society which creates favorable conditions to commit a crime and that expresses indifference when noticing the “alarm signals”.

Angela Vicario – Responsible for the Crime

The Vicario brothers would not have decided to murder Santiago Nasar without their sister’s confession. She was returned to home on the wedding day because of the issues with her virginity. In the first night her husband found out that his wife was already not a virgin. After the brothers’ inquiry, Angela Vicario admitted that she was forced to have sexual relationships with Santiago Nasar. However, it was not the truth. She said the first name that came to her mind in order to hide the name of her actual lover. The following quote proves such a claim “She looked for it in the shadows, she found it at first sight among the many, many easily confused names from this world and the other, and she nailed it to the wall with her well-aimed dart, like a butterfly with no will whose sentence has always been written. 'Santiago Nasar,' she said”. Thus, we can conclude that a lie has given a cause for a murder of a completely innocent man. This makes Angela Vicario also responsible for Santiago Nasar’s death.

The Society – Responsible for the Crime

There were many social conditions which had made the crime possible. Firstly, it has to do with some local traditions. Spanish culture allows brothers to protect the dignity of their sisters when it comes to of the topic of virginity. It is regarded as a norm to avenge the person who is accused of adultery, even without having any solid proofs or lawsuits. That is why the Vicario brothers saw no harm in their decision to kill Santiago Nasar. For instance, Pablo Vicario regarded the homicide as his duty rather than an illegal action, “But he was also the one who considered his duty fulfilled when the mayor disarmed them, and then it was Pablo Vicario who assumed command.”

Secondly, according to essay writing service the social inequality had made a contribution to committing the crime. In the novel, one can notice manifestations of gender discrimination. Women were treated similar to slaves whose main function is to serve their husbands This quote depicts the state of women in the culture “The girls were brought up to be married. They knew how to do screen embroidery, sew by machine, weave bone lace, wash and iron, make artificial flowers and fancy candy, and write engagement announcements”. Additionally, women enjoyed little protection in marriages. The husbands were allowed to return their wives back to their homes if they did not satisfy certain requirements, such being virgin at the time of the wedding. It was perceived in the society as a shameful state of affairs for the rest of life. That is why Angela Vicario felt forced to lie about the affair with Santiago Nasar. It was an attempt to save her dignity and persuade the brothers that she had lost virginity not as the result of a conscious decision but rather due to a violent attack of another man.

For instance, the priest Father Amador acquitted himself of not knowing how to solve this complicated situation, “My first thought was that it wasn't any business of mine but something for the civil authorities, but then I made up my mind to say something in passing to Pl?cida Linero”. Moreover, it is necessary to indicate that in many instances throughout the novel people indicated that the relationship between the Vicario brothers and Santiago Nasar were not any of their business. Even the example of the narrator provides understating for the state of affairs. He was informed about the possibility of a murder but decided not to bother himself about it. “My brother doesn't remember it."But even if I did remember, I wouldn't have believed it," he told me many times. "Who the fuck would ever think that the twins would kill anyone, much less with a pig knife!". Thus, we can conclude that there are no doubts that the society as a whole should bear responsibility for the tragic death of an innocent man Santiago Nasar.

To sum up, the analysis of the novel “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez reveals that not only the first-hand criminals should be accused of their unlawful actions but also many other members of the society, as well as the society as a whole. In many cases, crime is possible because of an unfair social order and deep-rooted evil traditions. In addition, crime is committed hand in hand a tacit consent of indifferent people. Thus, the tragedy could have been avoided if at least one person from the community had taken the responsibility to save the life of Santiago Nasar.
